Silver House
Located at 2224 S El Camino Real in San Mateo, CA, Silver House is a beloved neighborhood restaurant known for its authentic Cantonese cuisine and welcoming atmosphere. With its no-frills setting and a focus on delivering consistently delicious food, it has earned a reputation as a staple for Chinese dining in the area.
The restaurant offers a wide range of dishes that cater to various tastes. One of the highlights is the crispy fried eggplants, which are favored by many for their light and flavorful crunch. Another popular choice is the beef with bitter melon, which surprises diners with its non-bitter flavor and savory sauce. Silver House also offers a satisfying Wor Wonton Soup, loaded with an abundance of meats and tasty wontons, though some feel the serving bowls could be larger to accommodate the hearty portions.
For those who enjoy seafood, the salt and pepper shrimp stands out for its crispiness and full flavor. The shrimp crispy chow mein is another hit, though it is noted that the noodles may not remain consistently crispy throughout, a style choice that adds to its unique appeal. The Kung Pao chicken, with its bold flavors, tends to disappear quickly, though it occasionally lacks peanuts, which some guests expect in the dish.
What truly sets Silver House apart is its attentive service. The staff, many of whom have been with the restaurant for years, are known for their kindness and efficiency. Even the chefs, like Chef Wang, make it a point to engage with guests and ensure that their dining experience is top-notch. The restaurant’s atmosphere evokes the feel of an old Chinatown eatery, offering a taste of traditional Chinese dining in a casual setting.
Whether you're celebrating a special occasion or simply craving a comforting meal, Silver House provides a warm, inviting space where you can enjoy high-quality food at reasonable prices, typically averaging $25 per person. It remains a go-to spot for those in the San Mateo area, thanks to its consistently great food and friendly service.
Silver House Reviews
This is my go-to neighborhood spot for Chinese food. A San Mateo staple that's been here for many years. No frills and always hits the spot! So many dishes to try, so I will definitely be frequenting as long as they're in business.
Our family goes here every occasion- birthday, Mother's Day, Father's Day, you name it! They have delicious food and service is fast! Their staff has been there forever and has they're all kind! When food is cooked, even the kitchen people would not hesitate to bring them to customer's table. Their ambiance is like you're one of the old restaurants in China town. Haven't been to China, so this is the closest I can compare them to. Their cost per plate is reasonable. Averaging $25/p.p. Can't beat that!
I've had this craving for some old fashion beef chow fun with gravy for about a month. My Uncle Joe indulged me and allowed me to take him to lunch there; the Silver House restaurant recommended to me by a friend in the area. We ordered the chow fun, garlic sautéed pea leaf, and salt and pepper chicken wings. You know that taste when you get to eat exactly what you craved? That was our meal. The food was delicious in that comfort food non-fufu way (no California cuisine here). I wish I would always know exactly what I wanted to eat. This was definitely the taste on my palate. Like watching your favorite athlete or sports team dominate, this meal was just right and very satisfying . The waiter was also very good and attentive; he had that I think I know and trust you demeanor. The hometown ambiance of the restaurant was also perfect. Thank you Silver House! You are my go to place in San Mateo! Gene Y.
Been coming here for over 20 years. No soup today and they no longer have the dessert but we always enjoy the food. We love all the salt and pepper items, chicken wings, tofu, and fish. All of these are super good and had to get multiple orders of each for 11 people. Steamed tofu we had to order by showing a picture but we get 2 orders. Was here on a weeknight so it wasn't too busy and we were able to sit and talk for awhile.
Every time we get together with families in San Mateo, we tried different kind of food. This time we visit Silver House, the restaurant that my mom used to like very much. It's on the main street, so if you're lucky you find a parking spot in front of the restaurant, if not there're a few spots in the back alley or you have to park on the street some how. The restaurant is clean and simple, it was a Sunday night so there're quite a few people eating. The chef name Wang came and help us because my sister has been coming here quite often. We ordered quite a few dishes, most of them are Cantonese style dishes, the fried eggplants are our favorite, very crispy and tasty, everyone seems to like it very much. I had a craving for Chow Fun and it was excellent too. Every Chinese restaurant I eat, I always tried the Wor Wonton soup, and this place does have good soup with plenty of meats of all kinds, the wontons are tasty, but the bowls they served are too small to hold all the wontons and soup. My nephews love the shrimp crispy chow mein and it's quite good, but the noodles are not crispy throughout but I think that's the way they cook it. The salt and pepper shrimps are crispy and excellent. The Beef with bitter melon is very delicious, not bitter at all, and great sauce. The eggplant hot pot is quite flavorful. The Kung Pow chicken was gone in second due to being to tasty. I didn't get any peanuts at all that I recalled. The price here is quite reasonable and one thing nice is the service, very attentive and fast. We had some leftover to take home for Monday's lunch and chef Wang actually put some more meats for me. Quite surprising. It was a great lunch for me the next day. Every time we want to go to Chinese restaurant in San Mateo, I always request this Silver House from my sister. It's consistently good.
